Under 9 & Under 10 Mini Rugby

In accordance with Stage 2 of the RFU Rugby Continuum, our U9 and U10 teams play "Mini Rugby". The game is played between teams having a maximum of nine players, three of whom are forwards and form the scrum, with the remaining players forming the back line. Positions are interchangeable and coaches are encouraged to rotate players around the positions so they all get experience in different roles.

Our U9 and U10 teams are open to both boys and girls. Age groups are decided by a player's age on the 1st September. A player who is 8 on 1st September is U9 and will play for that age group for the remainder of that season. Similarly a player who is 9 on the 1st September is U10 and will play for that age group for the remainder of the season.

The emphasis at these age groups is on learning the basic rugby skills in a safe and enjoyable way. However both U9's and U10's play fixtures against teams from other clubs, both home and away.

Rugby Union has always been a great "social" sport - and we see no reason why our younger players should miss out on this aspect of the sport. The kids (and parents!) love to socialise in the clubhouse after every match. We also hold several social events every year - these serve to develop a sense of belonging and to raise money towards the development of our section.

Morley U10s victorious in the inaugural floodlit tournament

Last Friday saw Morley RFC's inaugural Floodlit Tournament take place at Scatchered Lane. The occasion saw six U10 teams taking part, split into two groups. The draw placed Morley in a formidable group including, Aireborough, and Roundhegians.

Morley were involved in the opening game of their group, against Aireborough and the lads didn't disappoint, treating the home supporters to a fantastic display of team rugby. Morley comfortably won the first match 30 points to 10 with Morley tries from Bailey Smith, 2 from Louis Thomson and a hatrick from Alfie Benton.

The last game in the group saw Morley against an inform Roundhegians team. Morley only needed a draw to put them in the final, were as Roundhegians needed to beat Morley to progress, so it was all to play for.

Both teams gave it their all which produced great end to end entertainment, much to the delight of the supporters. Morley's steely determination provided the first try. This was a tight physical battle with both teams giving little away but before the final whistle Morley stole another try resulting in a 10 nil win for the home team, both tries coming from Alfie Benton.

The final saw Morley against the group A winners Moortown.

Defying the wet conditions both teams gave it their all. Some imaginative passing and running saw Morley take the lead. Moortown fought hard but the Morley U10s were just too strong and knocked up three more tries.

Much to their credit Moortown did not give up and earned themselves a consolation try. Morley won the final 20 points to 5 with cheers from the stand that the 1st team would have been proud of. The Morley tries came from Connor Stevenson, Louis Thomson and a brace from Alfie Benton.

Throughout the evening the boys of Morley under 10s were fantastic, each and every one of them giving their all, in some tough battles and testing conditions. They should be very proud of themselves.
