Morley U8s Win Prestigious Sandal Festival
Monday 21st March 2011
The resigning Yorkshire district champions produced another outstanding performance to win one of the North's most coveted junior rugby titles, the Sandal Festival. Placed in a tough qualifying group, the Maroons scored wins over Old Brodleians, West Park Leeds, Old Rishworthians and Sandal 'A', running in 30 tries in the process.
The combination of discipline, few handling errors, a strong defence and fast flowing passing resulted in a local derby final against Sandal. In a tight and evenly-matched contest Morley overcame their rivals, two tries to one, after some powerful running and stout defence from man-of-the-tournament, Ben Armitage.
The half back pairing of Nathan Boote and Jamie Silkstone proved a handful for all opposing teams throughout the day, backed up by the direct drives from Finlay O'Neil, Luke Hutchinson, Matthew Gillman and Joseph Pyett. There were further impressive defensive performances from Ben Yates, with fast wing action from Matthew Ainley and a clever hooking display from Archie Horsfield.
The tournament victory proved sound preparation for this week's Yorkshire Cup defence.
