Goodbye Mr 'Chips'

Friday 2nd May 2008 8:59AM

IT was the end of an era at Morley Rugby Club in more ways than one when they played their last game of the season at Scatcherd Lane last week.
Not only did the Maroons lose their place in the national league, they also bid farewell to one of the club's most popular and longest serving players.

Second row forward Simon Chippendale - known to everyone as "Chippy" - played his last game before retiring from this level of rugby and was afforded the honour of leading the team out against Darlington Mowden Park.

The mainstay of the Morley line-out for the last decade and more may hail from the Pontefract area, but he became an honorary Morleian with 20 years service, man and boy, and his teammates marked his retirement with a presentation after his final game.

"Simon told us he was packing up about six weeks ago. He's basically had enough, but he might go and help Dave Sonia at Knottingley," said Morley backs coach Peter Seabourne.

"He's been a great player for the club and the players thanked him with their own presentation which they organised without me asking them to do it."
