Friday 4th December 2009
Darlington Mowden Park 19 Morley 27
A DETERMINED Morley display last Saturday brought another impressive away victory to extend their lead to five points at the top of National Three North.
The referee showed an early intent of keeping close control of the game when he sin-binned home prop Dan Miller for a technical offence and Simon Bradshaw edged the Maroons in front with the penalty.
Mowden Park, who went into the game on the back of victories over Middlesbrough and Darlington, capitalised on early mistakes, which allowed Ian Hodgson and Dean Kelbrick to slip through.
From one such mis-tackle, Hodgson fed a pass to Matt Lister, who went in for an easy try and Richie Young added the easy conversion.
Morley at last began to string passes together and from a driving maul, Mowden Park illegally pulled it down but Bradshaw's penalty attempt clipped the outside of the near post.
Morley regain the lead after 20 minutes when man-of-the-match Danny Chamberlain caught the ball and drove over with Bradshaw's conversion going in off a post.
From the re-start, Chris Morgan picked up a loose ball, Will Nutbeen drove forward with Jon Stannard in support.Sean Dadswell in turn passed to Mark Chester, who put over a great chip down the left. Bradshaw was first to react and hacked the ball on before diving over for a good try which he converted from the touchline.
No8 Joe Battye produced a try-saving tackle but the visitors strayed offside and Young landed a penalty to make it 17-10.
Bradshaw and Young traded penalties before Morley extended their lead in the final minute of the first half when Chester cleverly anticipated a pass and sprinted 40 yards to go over. Bradshaw added the extras.
There was still time for Young to reduce the half-time deficit with a 40th minute penalty.
Young missed with two further second half penalty attempts before Nutbeen was sin-binned and Robin Eatough made no made no mistake with the resulting kick.
Morley were reduced to 13 men when Michael Ash was sin-binned for offside and after 64 minutes, Peter Dadswell returned instead of Nutbeen. Morley then put in a magnificent defensive display until they were back to full strength after 70 minutes.
In the final minute, Mowden Park launched an attack, Liam Frost was sin-binned for obstruction but Eatough missed with the penalty which would have earned his side a bonus point.
