Marauders finish on a high note

Friday 2nd May 2008 8:49AM

With this game being the last of a well-fought campaign and having the club all to them selves the Morley Marauders meet in the bar in high spirits. The cub manager Rob Murray shaking his head at everybody knowing what a long night ahead him and his staff was about to have, alcohol was refused until after the game.
With Brods turning up a couple short Tony Heslop and the ageless Bill Chard agreed to make up the numbers. As the supporters gathered and both teams got over the shock of the size of the 1st team pitch and playing full 40 minuet half's the whistle blew and the game commenced.
Both sets of forwards started to size each other up with some strong running and big hits coming in from both sides. The Marauders captain Elam started to get quick quality ball to stand off Evans who showed his excellent skills from the off. With both sets of forwards refusing to give an inch Evans took it upon him self to make something out of nothing and score a very early try putting the home side on the front foot.
The Marauders front row of The Come Back Kid, Tea Bag Ted and The Unit, started to show their authority and really turned the screws on Brod's front five with some excellent technique and strong aggressive srummaging racking up four against the head and wheeling the scrum at ease to gain advantage for the Morley backs. With Sanderson soaring high in the lines and Robo busting a gut in the scrum the Marauders front five had a very productive and effective afternoon.
The Marauders back row (who hate to be left out) of Ooobey Doo, Greeny and Mr Ripley were in fine form with Dave Green leading from the front, Ooobey Doo showing just how brave (or daft) he is and Cheese showing what a strong runner he is, starting to edge there opposite numbers two of which had been borrowed from Morley.
The halfbacks of Elam and Evans made light work of their opposite numbers until a shock injury to Elam forced him off the pitch forcing Evans to take up the scrum half slot and Turton slotting in at 10. This all made room for young Yorky who started to flex his muscles almost straight away with some crunching tackles. Outside centre Kev was impressive through out the game making good ground and tackling when he had to. The Morley wingers of Wenni and The Claw (who have been in outstanding form all season) made them selves busy all afternoon and did everything except score. All this was over seen by Man For All Seasons Pears who by his standards had a very quite game but when needed all ways made the correct call.
The game was played at a very fast pace and the physical aspects were at time brutal from both sides which showed with just 5 mins to go the score was tied at 24-24. But the Marauder just had enough to up it one notch one last time and scored two quick trys with only one being converted to finish the game and the season as winners at 36 - 24.
The Marauders points came from Dave Evans 3 trys and 2 Conversions, Unit 1 Try, Kev 1 Try, Olly 1 Try and Yorky 1 Conversion. The try of the match and probably the funniest and most popular try ever score on the 1st team pitch has to go to The Unit, who cheered on by his Mum took a crash ball at pace (yes that's right at pace) just on Brods 22 metre line ball in one arm but still had Brods very own Unit (this lad nick named Large!) to beat and a 7 stone winger, not one Morley played could support due to fits of laughter, Unit hit Large scuttled him into touch then came the most outrageous side step ever, Unit just completely ran over the winger and swallow dived over the line to complete the funniest try in Morley's history, Nice one Robert Coulborn.
Final score Marauders 36 - Old Brods 24.
